James D. O’Brien, M.D.

He is a teacher, as well as a healer. Internal medicine specialist James O’Brien, M.D., has received numerous teaching awards from the University of California, Irvine, including the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1996, 2006 and 2007. Additionally, Dr. O’Brien was nominated for the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Humanism Award in 2006. This award recognizes medical school faculty physicians for demonstrating caring, compassionate and patient-centered care. Prior to his private practice, Dr. O’Brien co-directed the UCI Primary Care Clinic and served as an associate clinical professor. He is board-certified and will continue teaching medical students as a volunteer member of the UCI faculty. “I believe listening is the key to treating patients,” Dr. O’Brien says. His clinical interests include hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and preventive care.

Professional Qualifications

Dr. O’Brien graduated summa cum laude from Northeastern University, in Boston. After completing his training at the New York Medical College, he did his internship and residency at the University of California, Irvine, and subsequently served as chief resident in 1995-1996. During that time, he also received the Best Resident Teacher Award. Dr. O’Brien is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Society.

Personal Interests

Dr. O’Brien is married to a pediatrician, and they enjoy spending time with their two young boys. He helps manage his son’s club soccer team, and enjoys swimming and reading.
